How you like that- audience and industry

1) What are BLACKPINK fans known as - and what would the demographics / psychographics be for the BLACKPINK audience? BP fans are widely know as “blinks’, Due to the pop group being solely made up of females, that already creates a target audience. However,as they are females, this also creates a pathway for male listeners. There is a specific term in the K-pop industry called “visuals” and many times the K-pop group will l n assign certain people to be a visual, which essentially means that they are ‘eye candy’. To sum up gender/age and not to generalise, I wouldn’t say that there is a specific gender to target but when creating pieces of media, there can be features which call upon males and females of many ages.

2) What audience pleasures are offered by the music video for How You Like That?
The uses & gratifications theory (Blumer & Katz)  suggests that when we choose media to view, there media fulfils a certain need, lets apply this to the BP music video.
Information/education- despite there not being a clear link between the two. rather commonly, many people will listen to K-pop to learn to immerse themselves into the language (Korean).
Personal identity- many people of east Asia heritage, may listen or view this media as it directly relates to them.
  • Diversion: music video conventions – performance, effects, fast pace etc.
  • Personal relationships: Fan interaction online through social media is a key element of K-pop’s global success. Fans feel like they ‘know’ the band members.
  • Personal identity: K-pop fandom often involves copying the look of band members and seeing their own style reflected on screen.
  • Surveillance: Western audiences gain knowledge of Korean music and culture.

3) Pick out three particular shots, scenes or moments in the video that would particularly appeal to BLACKPINK fans. Why did you choose those moments?

4) How was the How You Like That music video marketed and promoted to the audience?
The video’s release was preceded by a series of teasers on the band’s social media accounts (including posters, photos focusing on individual band members and videos) and a reality show (24/365 with Blackpink, available on YouTube).

A “dance performance” video including the choreography for the music video was released in July 2020; by March 2021 this had achieved over 600 million views and was placed in the top 20 videos of the year by Billboard magazine.

5) Why is K-pop a global phenomenon and what has helped it to become so popular?
My personal opinion as to why kpop has become global is due to now manufactured most group/artists are. Despite the wide range of kpop music, every group or song is trying to target a specific audience, thus providing a sound for everyone
