Denotation & Connotation blog tasks: advert analysis
Denotation: the subject is a young boy who is wearing a blue and grey jumper. The text is in bold lettering and white in colour. The name of the company is on the left hand corner.
Connotation: The text says "Dig toilets, Not graves" this statement emphasis upon the severity of the current water issues many third world countries are facing. The expression on the boys face connotes a sad feeling because he looks sad.
Analysis: This advert is speaking upon a sensitive issues to an audience, this means that it is to be taken seriously. This is supported by the subject of the advert looking directly into the lens of the camera, the importance of this is that the audience who are seeing this advert will be more inclined to pay using their hard earned money, as it feels more personal because of the eye contact. This advert is constructed to make the consumer feel sympathy ergo, take positive action.
Denotation: a woman wearing a niqab with a bruised and bloody eye. With the text "some things cant be covered" written below. she is looking directly into the camera.
Connotation: as she is wearing a niqab we can only assume that she is a Muslim girl and a person of colour.
analysis : The eye contact and close up shot speaks directly to those involved in any domestic abuse.
