clothing- the clothing which is worn by the main characters is extremely important as it gives the audience an exact time period where the show is set in. For example, the character 'Dustin' wears a graphic t-shirt which were popular in the 1980's. In addition the clothing worn, branding of the clothes was unique to the time period : 'Quiksilver' was an integral part of Californian fashion in the 1980's and because of this Strangerthings chose to infuse their show with authentic brands specific to the time period. This is so anyone who watches this show will be able to guess that the time bracket is 70-80's.
Analysis:
The effect the lighting gives to the audience is , it tells them if, and or when something "bad" may happen. It's an indicator to the audience and it makes them get on the edge of their seat, building suspense. The director does this by making us aware of the connotation of lighting and danger. Setting: Denotation: In the opening scene the man running is in a lab coat. The scene switches to the kids sitting around a table playing DnD , then Mike goes upstairs to the kitchen. The boys then go home and the scene switches to them riding their bikes on the road. Then Will falls off his bike from seeing something that frightened him. He runs home and the setting is changed to Will's house. Connotation: The change of scenery may suggest that there will be a lot happening in the show and there will be a lot of different perspectives throughout. This means that there are going to be many times throughout the show that we see a change in scenery. Analysis: The scenery could have a change of emotion on the audience as it could make them feel the same emotions the character is feeling in that scene. The effect is created by where the character is and what they are doing or what has just happened in that place and or time.
Costume:
Denotation: The kids are all wearing long sleeved clothes and jeans. Even the Mum is wearing a long sleeved jumper in the kitchen. When the kids leave they're all wearing thick coats.
Connotation:
The reason the characters might be bundled up in warm clothes is because it might be winter during that time. So they're dressed according to the weather. The winter like scene could be an indicator that it's near Christmas time.
Analysis:
The audience may feel a type of comfort or homey feeling from the way the characters are wrapped up in comfy jumpers. It may remind them of early winter nights and a cup of hot chocolate at their bedside while they're watching their favourite movie.
